Around the world and back again! With 10 years of Chiropractic experience, Matthew has just returned to Australia after 6 years in Scotland and is looking forward to getting back into the swing of things in sunny Brisbane.
When Matthew was 16 he did work experience with an Optometrist. Having decided that was the career for him, Matthew wanted to do something that he thought would be fun for his second week, like work at a theme park or a movie theatre. His mother though had other ideas, and insisted he observe a health practitioner in another field, if that was what he was interested in. At the last minute, Matthew’s friend mentioned the Chiropractor who he and his family regularly saw, and how the Chiropractor could tell how well he had played golf that weekend by how stable his pelvis was. Matthew’s friend told him that his Chiropractor got it right every time. Not believing this, his decision was made and he did a week’s work experience with a Chiropractor so he could see for himself.
Matthew watched the Chiropractor all week. He would test muscles and upon finding weakness would treat patients’ spines, and then the muscles would test strong. Matthew liked that he was able to help a large range of people with a great variety of conditions. Person after person who came into the clinic would say how great it was that he wanted to be a Chiropractor, which made Matthew feel a little guilty seeing as his mother had encouraged him to do work experience in the medical field and not ‘something fun’ at the theme park! He liked that the patients really seemed to appreciate what the Chiropractor did for them, and hearing them say that he had changed their life in one way or another.
After the end of the week, Matthew liked the feel of the clinic and that the Chiropractor seemed to be really making a difference to a lot of people, from kids to adults. He had seen the Chiropractor do the muscle testing many times - he would test the muscles, find a weakness, treat the spine and then the weakness would be gone. Matthew had never seen anything like this before and was sure the Chiropractor must be cheating! Then it was Matthew’s turn. The Chiropractor took x-rays and started to do muscle testing, and Matthew was determined not to let the Chiropractor overpower him and find any weakness with his muscles. The Chiropractor tested his leg muscles then slowly went down his spine. All of a sudden, the Chiropractor was touching Matthew’s spine and his legs went weak. Matthew jumped off the bench and asked “what did you do?!” The Chiropractor put his arm around Matthew and took him over to the light box where he showed Matthew the x-rays. He counted down the vertebrae on the x-ray until he came to one that looked out of place. The Chiropractor then counted down Matthew’s spine until he reached that same spot, which was where he had touched earlier that had made Matthew’s muscles weak. It was obvious that the weakness and the x-ray matched. The Chiropractor said “If you treat that, we can help you function better. We can treat that area to get your body working as well as it can be”. From that moment on, Matthew was hooked on Chiropractic and wanted to find out more.
Matthew commenced his Chiropractic studies with Macquarie University in Sydney. After completing a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Chiropractic, Matthew went on to do a Masters of Chiropractic. After practicing for a few years in Sydney, Matthew moved to Scotland and sat the UK Chiropractic Board exams and was lucky enough to work with the largest Chiropractic group in Europe.
Matthew focuses on being a well-respected Chiropractor who, through his attitude, education and approach, improves the health of individuals and raises the profile of chiropractic care in the wider community and the medical profession. Proprioceptive medicine (applied kinesiology) and child developmental neurology are his particular areas of interest.
In his spare time, Matthew enjoys surf skiing and kayaking, and his wife would say he has an unhealthy interest in watching Q&A on the ABC.
Matthew is excited about joining the Windsor Chiropractic team and looks forward to meeting you soon.
