Welcome Dr. Matthew Avery

Around the world and back again! With 10 years of Chiropractic experience, Matthew has just returned to Australia after 6 years in Scotland and is looking forward to getting back into the swing of things in sunny Brisbane.
When Matthew was 16 he did work experience with an Optometrist. Having decided that was the career for him, Matthew wanted to do something that he thought would be fun for his second week, like work at a theme park or a movie theatre. His mother though had other ideas, and insisted he observe a health practitioner in another field, if that was what he was interested in. At the last minute, Matthew’s friend mentioned the Chiropractor who he and his family regularly saw, and how the Chiropractor could tell how well he had played golf that weekend by how stable his pelvis was. Matthew’s friend told him that his Chiropractor got it right every time. Not believing this, his decision was made and he did a week’s work experience with a Chiropractor so he could see for himself.
Matthew watched the Chiropractor all week. He would test muscles and upon finding weakness would treat patients’ spines, and then the muscles would test strong. Matthew liked that he was able to help a large range of people with a great variety of conditions. Person after person who came into the clinic would say how great it was that he wanted to be a Chiropractor, which made Matthew feel a little guilty seeing as his mother had encouraged him to do work experience in the medical field and not ‘something fun’ at the theme park! He liked that the patients really seemed to appreciate what the Chiropractor did for them, and hearing them say that he had changed their life in one way or another.
After the end of the week, Matthew liked the feel of the clinic and that the Chiropractor seemed to be really making a difference to a lot of people, from kids to adults. He had seen the Chiropractor do the muscle testing many times - he would test the muscles, find a weakness, treat the spine and then the weakness would be gone. Matthew had never seen anything like this before and was sure the Chiropractor must be cheating! Then it was Matthew’s turn. The Chiropractor took x-rays and started to do muscle testing, and Matthew was determined not to let the Chiropractor overpower him and find any weakness with his muscles. The Chiropractor tested his leg muscles then slowly went down his spine. All of a sudden, the Chiropractor was touching Matthew’s spine and his legs went weak. Matthew jumped off the bench and asked “what did you do?!” The Chiropractor put his arm around Matthew and took him over to the light box where he showed Matthew the x-rays. He counted down the vertebrae on the x-ray until he came to one that looked out of place. The Chiropractor then counted down Matthew’s spine until he reached that same spot, which was where he had touched earlier that had made Matthew’s muscles weak. It was obvious that the weakness and the x-ray matched. The Chiropractor said “If you treat that, we can help you function better. We can treat that area to get your body working as well as it can be”. From that moment on, Matthew was hooked on Chiropractic and wanted to find out more.
Matthew commenced his Chiropractic studies with Macquarie University in Sydney. After completing a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Chiropractic, Matthew went on to do a Masters of Chiropractic. After practicing for a few years in Sydney, Matthew moved to Scotland and sat the UK Chiropractic Board exams and was lucky enough to work with the largest Chiropractic group in Europe.
Matthew focuses on being a well-respected Chiropractor who, through his attitude, education and approach, improves the health of individuals and raises the profile of chiropractic care in the wider community and the medical profession. Proprioceptive medicine (applied kinesiology) and child developmental neurology are his particular areas of interest.
In his spare time, Matthew enjoys surf skiing and kayaking, and his wife would say he has an unhealthy interest in watching Q&A on the ABC.
Matthew is excited about joining the Windsor Chiropractic team and looks forward to meeting you soon.

Has this year caught up on you?

Manage Stress, Manage Weight

Stress management image.
Does stress prompt you to eat everything in sight?
You’ve just lost your job, your daughter came home with pink hair, the debt pile is getting higher and higher and your son needs braces on his teeth. So… do you run to or away from the fridge?
It’s a fact, people who are under a lot of stress tend to do one of two things – either they eat more or they eat less. But despite what they do, more often than not, people under stress gain weight!
The body’s response to stress is a release of adrenaline which triggers the “fight or flight” response in your body. You’re highly energised to either fight the immediate danger (stress) or run away from it! Another hormone, known as corticotrophin releasing hormone (CRH) is released at the same time, along with cortisol. These elevated levels of adrenaline and CRH decrease your appetite at first, but unfortunately, this response is short–lived.
The purpose of cortisol is to increase your appetite after an immediate danger (stressor) has passed. The trouble is, with chronic stress, your body is in a perpetual state of “fight or flight,” meaning more and more cortisol is being produced, thereby increasing your appetite. And even if you don’t eat more…the mere presence of this hormone slows down your metabolism and tends to cause fat retention, especially around the midsection!
So…what can you do when stressed to combat weight gain?
  • Get proper rest – cortisol levels rise when you lose sleep and you may feel hungrier than you would with proper rest!
  • Take a walk – even if it’s only for 15–20 minutes several times a week. Exercise releases “good” hormones that make you feel better and reduce stress and it burns calories – so it offers 2-for-1 benefits!
  • Eat six smaller meals a day and keep the diet healthy! This helps keep your blood sugar (insulin) and cortisol levels in check.
  • Find ways to relax – yoga, meditation, sitting on a beach, reading a good book, watching a film – this works like exercise to reduce stress by producing positive brain chemicals!
  • Laugh – no matter what – always find reasons to laugh! Watch a funny video, go out with friends you enjoy – laughing also releases the “good” brain chemicals that relieve stress.
Just keep in mind, nothing lasts forever. There’s a saying, “This too shall pass.” The stress will go away eventually, that is for sure. Just try to minimise the weighty effects it can have on you while it’s around!

How Do You Explain Chiropractic?

The Truth About Chiropractic

Effective. Because the nervous system controls every part of your body, and chiropractic care helps restore nervous system integrity, chiropractic care has been known to help a variety of health issues.
Natural. Simply put, chiropractic care doesn't add chemicals to your body. And it doesn't remove parts. Instead, chiropractic care seeks to restore proper control and regulation of your body so health can return, naturally.
Safe. Chiropractic care is so safe, even newborns get adjusted to correct the spinal trauma from the birth process!
No side effects. "Side effects" tend to be positive ones such as better balance, more energy, increased vitality and improved coordination.
Smart choice. It makes sense to correct the underlying cause rather than fool the body with drugs.
If you know someone who you think we could help, please send them our way, or at least share these reasons why chiropractic care makes sense.

Why Do Kids Get Headaches?

Why Do Kids Get Headaches?

Headaches and neck pain image.
Our examination is designed to discover the three possible causes of your child's headaches: physical, chemical or emotional issues.
Does your child frequently complain about having a headache? Headaches may be common, but they’re not normal. The problem with headaches in children, however, is that they may be more difficult to diagnose in terms of cause and effect. This is especially true with younger children, because they frequently lack the verbal skills or experience to effectively communicate what is wrong or what they are feeling.
Tension headaches are the most common type of headache found in children (just like in adults) and usually involve about 75% of all childhood headaches. Episodic tension headaches occur several times a month, while chronic tension headaches are much more frequent – more than 15 occurrences in a month. Recent studies seem to point to a genetic link to these types of headaches, where previously, none was thought to exist. Triggers may be lack of sleep, tension in the home or school environment, second-hand cigarette smoke, skipped meals, poor nutrition, eye strain and bright lights.
Migraine-type headaches, though more infrequent, also affect children and if a parent suffers from migraines, their child is 50% more likely to experience them as well. Put a different way, in 70%-90% of all children with migraines, there is a family history of migraines as well. Migraine triggers include foods, such as chocolate and caffeine, lack of sleep, missed meals and, particularly in females, hormonal changes.
Children’s headaches can also be caused by chronic ear and sinus infections, onset of menstruation, poor vision, strep throat or fever. While most parents reach for over-the-counter pain relievers to deal with their child’s pain, this approach may produce certain undesirable side effects and even trigger rebound headaches.
There are many drug-free alternative ways to deal with children’s headaches. Naturally, we think a thorough chiropractic examination is the best place to start. We’ll conduct a full screening to pinpoint triggers and identify and reduce any nerve interference from the upper spine that might be involved. Locating and correcting vertebral subluxation in our youngest patients have often been successful in relieving the pain, frequency and duration of their headaches in a relatively short time.
A simple solution that is easily within your reach – give us a call if your child is experiencing frequent headaches.

Posture Assessment- Back To School

Posture - Back to School

Posture is fast becoming one of the most important measures of good health.

Poor posture can create tension, soreness, headaches, back pain and fatigue.  It can also affect our mood; diminish our breathing capacity by up to 30 per cent and cause respiratory problems, chest tightness, and poor digestion.

Three issues are key to understanding how to have good posture; why it is a major health problem in young people today; and how you can prevent bad posture from affecting your child’s health.

Firstly, good posture depends on the BRAIN. It’s not just a matter of trying to hold your shoulders back. Good posture depends on the brain’s ability to communicate effectively through specific nerve pathways to the muscles which control posture.

Secondly, new data released from the Chiropractors Association of Australia shows that Australian postural problems are on the rise (1).  This appears to be directly proportional to the dramatic changes in student education habits, including the usage of computers and mobile devices. Students tend to hold poor posture while using mobile devices for sustained periods.  Poor posture not only leads to damage of muscles and ligaments, but can also cause damage to the posture-related Brain-Nerve-Muscle posture pathways.  This is why some kids find it increasingly difficult to hold good posture.

Finally, Chiropractic adjustments and specific exercises can directly improve this Brain-Body communication and improve posture.

Assessment is the first step.  With the use of a sophisticated computer programme, we take postural photographs to objectively measure posture distortions.  These digitised images allow us to determine abnormal positions of the skull, shoulders, pelvis, knees and feet.  In other words, we can measure how far out of alignment your child’s spine is.

A Digitised Posture Assessment is $40.00, which may be offset by your Extras Private Health Cover.
