New Chiropractic research on professional AFL Players-
This will change everything
Chiropractic can significantly reduce the risk of hamstring injuries and lower limb muscle strain in elite footballers.
The new research study involving two Australian Rules clubs has found results that will dramatically prevent AFL players being sidelined unnecessarily.
Just by adding Chiropractic to the normal treatment methods reduced time sidelined by hamstring injuries from 14 matches to just 4.
Players sidelined due to lower limb strain was reduced by a staggering 21 missed matches to just 4 missed.
Hamstring and lower limb muscle strains are the most common injuries in the AFL. Traditional injury management programs, generally involve a combination of physiotherapy, massage and strength and conditioning management. Surveys into these types of injuries over the last 15years has shown no rate of improvement with this traditional approach. This Chiropractic study could lead to some major improvements in these outcomes in the future.
This research showed that hamstring and lower limb muscle strain injuries can be dramatically reduced through the inclusion of a sports chiropractor.
Here are the highlights of the research findings:
The study lasted an entire season and involved 59 players from two VFL clubs.
The group which included chiropractic care had a 4% chance of a hamstring injury and a 4% chance of a lower limb muscle strain.
The group which did not receive chiropractic had a 17% chance of hamstring injury and a 28% chance of a lower limb muscle strain.
The chiropractic group missed just four matches during the season through hamstring or lower limb muscle strains.
The group not receiving chiropractic treatment missed 14 matches through hamstring injury and 21 matches through lower limb muscle strain.
The group receiving chiropractic also had significant reductions in non-contact knee injuries, low back pain and improvements in physical components of health.
‘eSSS’ stands for Exercise, Sleeping, Sitting and Standing. The ‘eSSS’ Workshop has practical answers that will make a major difference in your life.
If you truly understand these four areas, you can maximise your results at our office AND have a much greater chance of doing what you want in life.
World expert and professor of Biomechanics, Stuart McGill, PhD, says to avoid the use of gym machines, particularly the seated leg-press (1), and it’s important to understand why.Our workshops are not just about teaching a bunch of exercises, but about understanding the most common deficiencies in our musculo-skeletal system and what types of exercises will work best to correct them.
These days most of us sit for prolonged periods of time, so if your seated position is wrong, think of the damage that will be doing in the long term. And when it comes to pillows, one size can’t possibly suit all. Find out what is best for you, even if you change beds.
The purpose of our workshop is to help our practice members to stop recreating problems. Our goal is for you to walk out of our office with some easy-to-use principles that you can begin using immediately, and for the rest of your life.
Our next workshop is on Saturday, 10th September from .Spaces are limited so book now.
We would like to share some exciting news with you.
Windsor Chiropractic has been joined by Dr Lisa Sullivan, who has recently returned from Cambodia where she set up a health care program for destitute infants and children. The program, called ‘Two Hands One World’, was based on the healing power of chiropractic.
Lisa found the experience of establishing the Centre ‘eye opening’.She said she was continually surprised by how well the children responded to her gentle techniques. She achieved results with a range of problems – from bizarre complaints to more common childhood ailments including colic, ear infections, and upper respiratory infections.
A growing number of studies support the effectiveness of Chiropractic in helping with these childhood conditions (1). However, we believe Chiropractic is not some cure all, but rather something which helps your body function better, and improves quality of life.
Initially, most people see a chiropractor for back pain, neck pain, and other injuries. But research reports that people being treated for these conditions also experience improvement in other non-musculoskeletal issues, such as digestion, breathing and visual problems (2).
It doesn’t always occur to people that correcting spinal problems before they become painful is about treating symptoms before they start. Studies have begun to unveil the benefits of chiropractic adjustments for people who don't have any pain. Recent scientific research now lends support to the idea that chiropractic correction of spinal problems can aid the immune responses of the body by reducing nerve interference (3). Keeping the
spinal nerves fit may help boost the competence of your immune system. This link is supported by posture studies. It has now been proven that a person’s posture can directly affect their health. An increased forward curve in the mid spine (often manifesting as a forward hunch in the back) or a forward head position can be directly related to general health problems (4).
Chiropractors help tens of thousands of people everyday Australia wide – but we really can’t take the credit. We’ve never cured anyone of anything! What we do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the whole body responds by healing itself.
We have been serving this community for over seven years. This week’s addition of Dr Lisa Sullivan is a significant next step for us.Lisa’s postgraduate qualifications in paediatrics and demonstrated commitment to the health of children fit well with our focus on family health.
If you are unsure whether you could benefit from chiropractic care, you can always begin with an in-house spinal screening. The screening costs $25 and enables us to take a look to see if you or a family member have a problem that might respond well to chiropractic care.
In a spinal screening, we undertake two spinal scans – spinal electromyography, which detects muscle tension along the spine; and thermography which detects a component of nerve stress. Our state-of-the-art technology helps us to objectively detect patterns of nerve disturbance, as well as to document and monitor your results.
Our main goal is to find out what’s going on and see if you are in the right place to get the care you need. Our promise to you is that we will either recognise that we are the right people to give you the help that you need, or we will get you to someone who can help you, through our very effective referral network.
A spinal screening is an opportunity to see whether a full examination is required (a complete initial examination costs $85). If we feel from the initial spinal screening that your case would respond well to chiropractic care, then you simply progress to a thorough initial consultation at a time convenient to you. If you continue to that next step, the initial $25 for the preliminary spinal screening will be credited against the total cost of $85, and you will only pay the $60 balance).
Our Centre is called Windsor Chiropractic, located at 65 Eildon Road, Windsor (opposite Windsor Railway Station). Call our office today for an appointment on telephone number 07-3357 3366 and speak to one of our friendly assistants, either Joan, Kym, or Tamara.
Welcome Dr Lisa Sullivan (BSc Chiro, B Chiro, Cert Chiro Pediatrics)
Lisa graduated from Murdoch University School of Chiropractic in 2006. She has worked at family practices in Perth, Broome and the Sunshine Coast.
Lisa has completed post graduate studies in pregnancy and pediatrics, which fits in fantastically well with our focus on families!
Lisa has also been to Cambodia to build an organisation called ‘One World Two Hands’ which provides necessary health care, including Chiropractic, to the disadvantaged. AsLisa explains
‘As a Chiropractor, I know that our unique skills can have a profound impact on peoples lives. People in developing or third world areas are in such great need’...Now that’s awesome!
Helping kids stay well would have to be one of the most rewarding parts of our careers.
There is substantial research demonstrating chiropractic techniques are effective in helping upper respirator infections, better immune function, and families report less sickness and less need for medications.
We love what we do! welcome aboard Lisa.
The question was asked, ‘Do maintenance visits to your Chiropractor for chronic, non-specific low back pain, result in a better long term outcome? The answer was published in prestigious journal, Spine. It was a big YES! This new, single blinded placebo controlled study, conducted by the Faculty of Medicine at MansouraUniversity, conclusively demonstrates that maintenance care provides significant benefits for those with chronic low back pain. BACKGROUND: Chiropractic is a common treatment option for low back pain. Numerous clinical trials have attempted to evaluate its effectiveness for different subgroups of acute and chronic low back pain previously, but the efficiency of maintenance chiropractic in chronic non-specific low back pain (LBP) has never been studied. In this study, 60 patients with chronic, non-specific LBP lasting at least 6 months were randomised into three groups: 1. One third of patients received 12 treatments of ‘sham’ chiropractic over a one-month period. 2. One third of patients received 12 treatments of chiropractic during a one-month period, with no follow-up care during the next nine months, and; 3. One third of patients received 12 chiropractic visits during the first month, followed by “maintenance” chiropractic every two weeks, for the next nine months. To determine any difference among these three care groups, researchers measured pain and disability scores, generic health status, and back-specific patient satisfaction at baseline, and at 1-month, 4-months, 7-months, and at 10-months. RESULTS: Patients in the ‘real’ chiropractic groups (groups 2 & 3) experienced significantly lower pain and disability scores than the sham group at the end of the first 1-month period. At the 10-month follow-up, only the maintenance group maintained improvements in pain and disability, while the group that only received 1-months care had reverted to their pre-treatment pain and disability levels. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first medically managed trial that clearly demonstrates that maintenance care provides significant benefits to those who suffer from chronic low back pain. This study re-confirms Descarreaux’s virtually identical 2004 JMPT study, which concluded that “This experiment suggests that maintenance spinal manipulations after intensive manipulative care is beneficial to patients to maintain subjective post-intensive treatment disability levels”. It also confirms the findings of Dr. Ron L. Rupert, in his ground-breaking JMPT article, titled Maintenance Care: Health Promotion Services Administered to US Chiropractic Patients Aged 65 and Older, Part II, which found that:
“The cost of health care for patients receiving Maintenance Chiropractic (MC) in this study was far less than that for patients of similar age in the general population, despite the doubling of physician visits (medical plus chiropractic). The greatest difference in health care costs with patients receiving MC was in the areas of nursing care and, especially, hospital care. This reduced need for hospital and nursing home services has recently been corroborated by the research of Coulter et al..” [22]
